Careers and job opportunities at ARO

ARO sometimes has positions open for trained and experienced AWA’s but does not encourage volunteering in our areas of operation because of the harsh nature of the work. (see Volunteering at ARO) ARO normally places adverts on this page for any positions available.

Volunteering at ARO

ARO is not a pet shelter, but an animal welfare hospital and mobile clinic facility. Any dogs and cats placed up for adoption will be in foster care and as such we do not have kennels or a cattery full of unwanted animals in need of care. ARO’s mobile clinics travel to indigent and often dangerous poverty stricken areas and as such ARO is not keen to take volunteers out, but are willing to negotiate this on an individual basis. If you are interested in travelling into township and informal settlement communities please email aro@animalrescue.org.za or call either Dr Kotze or Karen de Klerk on 021-3965511.
ARO requires that any volunteer signs an indemnity form.

School volunteers & School Community Service:
The ARO hospital is not a place to send children to learn about pets or how to care for a sick animal. It is a busy welfare level veterinary hospital which is occupied by sick and suffering animals who may have had surgery or who are suffering from disease or illness. If your son or daughter is Grade 10 or 11, we may be able to offer some community hours at the discretion of the Senior Veterinarian and the ARO Manager. However, this is more likely to be for cleaning dirty cages and stables, more than having any hands on handling of dogs and cats. To apply please contact aro@animalrescue.org.za ARO requires at least a weeks’ notice of Community Service. Transport to and from ARO is required.

General Volunteering

ARO has resident rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies and donkeys. These animals love to be fussed and cared for but sadly, ARO cannot take volunteers under the age of 16 for this work as we do not have staff available to supervise youngsters. We often have other very handy and useful tasks that need to be done like sorting, packing and filling newsletter envelopes or packing Christmas cards etc. If you are interested in partaking in activities which does not involve pet care, please let us know on aro@animalrescue.org.za
