A
BIT ABOUT OUR HOSPITAL
The
Animal Rescue Organisation was established in 1986 specifically
to address the plight of animals living in township and informal
settlement communities around the Cape. Thousands of animals live
in amongst the poorest community settlements and up until 1986 had
limited access to welfare services. The result of this was untold
suffering and rampant overbreeding of both dogs and cats.
So
it is with great pride that Animal Rescue can now boast a successful
hospital facility as well as the services of 3 Mobile Clinics manned
by trained animal welfare assistants. Over 20 000 sick animals receive
our care every year and from humble beginnings working from the
back of cars, we now hold an essential part of the animal welfare
sector in the Western Cape of South Africa.
The
Animal Rescue Hospital situated in Ottery, Cape Town came about
after years of hard planning and saving by the Management Committee.

OUR
HOSPITAL AT WORK
The
Animal Rescue hospital is headed by Dr Roelof van der Merwe who
leads a team of 8 staff. Animal Rescue's work is centered on providing
veterinary care for indigent people's animals. The hospital opens
a small clinic daily for local communities, with the bulk of work
being provided from the 3 Mobile Clinics
within township communities. The Mobile Clinics travel daily into
the poorest informal settlement and township environments providing
essential veterinary services such as:
Dipping against Mange and skin diseases.
Suturing of minor wounds
Deworming
Diagnosis of wounds and diseases requiring hospital treatments eg:
Parvo Virus, Biliary (Tick Fever), etc.
Nutritional Advice and provision of subsidized dog and cat feeds
Bookings and collections of animals for sterilization
Vaccination
Any
animals in need of veterinary care at the hospital in Ottery are
brought in via the Mobile Clinics. All animals brought to the hospital
are sterilized before discharge. All sterilizations are performed
at the Animal Rescue Hospital by Dr Van der Merwe or an additional
veterinary surgeon.

ANKA, a
female, spayed and innoculated.
This
sweet natured little girl was found at the point of death
in Guguletu, Cape Town.
We suspect that she was previously in a good home and has
somehow ended up suffering.
We now wish to find her a loving home where she will know
no more suffering. She still has to recover fully, but ARO
will assist with this.
Adoption fees and conditions apply. Call Karen de Klerk or
Avril Thomas for further discussions.

On
19 June 2008 we received this dog. She was still alive. She had
been thrown off a bakkie (pickup van) onto the side of the road
in rural farmlands of Ottery. She was old and unable to get up.
She was full of disease, starvation and neglect and was suffering
terribly. A local man passing saw the dog surrounded by curious
children, who told him of the dog being thrown off the back of a
passing bakkie.The
dog was loaded onto another bakkie and was brought to ARO hospital.
We could not save her and put her to sleep humanely and quietly.
ARO was a matter of minutes from where the dog was dumped. We see
so much of this. She was old and sickly, in need of some extra care.
Instead she was treated like a bag of rubbish, rather than the beautiful
creature she is. Believe it or not,she was a pedigree German Shepherd,
possibly well bred and and an ex-much loved pet.
